[ Signal No. 1 ]
A storm has just formed out in the Pacific Ocean and is now making its presence felt in the islands. I watched the dark clouds release tiny drops of water as I sit near the window. The heaven’s must have felt what I feel right now and is kind enough to join me in tears.
[ Time travel to the past ]
It was a fine summer day and I was out early in the morning for my routine jog around the park. It was a busy park since it is situated inside the central business district. Though it’s early in the morning, you can see people in suites and formal clothing coming out from the tall buildings across hurrying to go home, their faces stressed and sleepy from working all night. I sat down on a bench after a few rounds of jogging when I saw her walking past the fountain. She never misses to pass by the park and she was the main reason I started jogging.
[ The cowardly dog ]
It’s been a while since I started to, kind of, stalk her but I still do not have the courage to approach her or to introduce myself. She was the most beautiful girl that I’ve seen but every time I try to talk to her, my heart pounds very fast and I feel almost out of breathe. So I was resolved in watching her from afar. But one dewy morning as I was starting my morning jog around the park, a loose dog started barking at me and chased me around. I was so terrified that my reflex took over and made me climb up the tree. Gladly, someone hushed, called the dog and it went away.
[ A silly looking monkey ]
As I looked to where the dog ran to, I saw her and she saw me hanging like a scared little monkey on a tree. She was smiling. I would really love to hide my face that very moment but she approached me and apologized. Still, after the embarrassment that I’ve gone through, I was lucky. The dog was hers and his little brother just lost hold of the dog’s leash. She apologized at what happened and I grabbed the chance to introduce myself.
[ Claire ]
It was our first conversation and it was a long one. I was able to know her name and I was surprised when I found out that she also lives in the same condominium unit as I do. Our conversation was cut off by her little brother and her dog. Since they were on their way home, I offered to walk with them. Her voice was so angelic and she was funny and witty.
[ 24th Floor ]
We continued chatting even inside the crowded elevator. She was cracking jokes and I can’t help but burst out in laughter. People around were already staring at us until we reach the floor where her unit was. As the elevator door shuts, I was all smiles. I didn’t care about the stares projected to me by those around. I was so consumed with happiness; I forgot to get off my floor. This was indeed a lucky day.
I started courting her and making her special every day. I was not really sure on how I place in her heart but I still continued showing her my best foot forward, exerting a hundred percent effort in everything I do until finally I got her ‘yes’. It was a chilly then but our new found love made the night the warmest ever.
[ 365 days to the future ]
Tomorrow will be our special day. I prepared something special for that day. I rented a mobile theater and asked help from a friend to cook her favorite kare-kare. I plan to drive the mobile theater to Tagaytay and there we would watch ‘My Amnesia Girl’ while having dinner. I picked her up and we started our way to our destination. We were blessed because the traffic was not that heavy. We were laughing all the time during the trip. But in a split second, darkness was all there is.
I lost track of time but when I opened my eyes, I saw a bright light. Voices are in a rush coupled with some strange beeping sound. It dawn on me that I was in a hospital getting treatment. I was so confused. Then I remembered Claire. I rolled my eyes around to check on her but all I see are people in scrub suits. My heart wants to stand up and look for her but my body was too weak to respond. Then the beeping got faster and darkness surrounded me again.
[ Sleeping beauty ]
I woke up with a headache and still confused. My mom was beside me holding my hand. She was close to tears. I knew something went wrong. Then I asked her about Claire but she did not respond. Instead she asked a nurse to get me into a wheelchair and wheeled me in to a room that has ICU on the door. There she was, her angelic face bruised and wires and tubes were connected to her. There was no movement. I was calling out for her but she stayed still.
The doctor came in and informed me about her condition. I was crushed. How can I bring this unto her? Emotions just kept flooding my heart. This was a test I would not dare take. How can I let someone I love be in this condition? If I could just turn back the time, I would do anything to prevent this from happening.
